Medway Business Awards

Being a judge of the Medway Business Awards is a fantastic way to appreciate the skills and expertise that Medway has to offer across a wide range of business sectors.

Furley Page has sponsored the Awards for the last two years, and hopes to continue in the same vein, being very much committed to Medway having taken stunning new offices within the Historic Dockyard in Chatham.

As a partner in the firm, heading up the corporate team as well as the Chatham office, time seems to fly by and the Awards for 2009 where soon upon us.  August arrived and with it a sense of anticipation when I met with my fellow judges to consider the applications.  From over 40 entrants, we had to get it down to 12 finalists which was no easy feat. We then had two days of judging, where we visited the businesses, checked out their operations and interviewed management.

This year, the entrants ranged from manufacturers of steel products, electrical gadgets and quality wooden buildings, through to service providers in specialist fields such as IT, education, telephony, care and training.

Working with a wide range of businesses myself, I enjoyed meeting the entrants, getting a sense of what motivates them and how, more often than not, through hard work and determination they have created a successful business out of nothing.

In true Dragons Den style (but without the cash to go with it, unfortunately!), all 12 finalists were put on the spot by me, an accountant and banker – the three support functions that every business should have – well, I suppose I would say that!

The judging is over and we all agreed that 2009 saw some worthy applicants.  No-one finds out who has won until the awards ceremony which is taking place at Priestfield Stadium on 20 November - well, I could tell you, but then I’d have to kill you!  It is bound to be a great evening, showcasing some of what Medway has to offer, as well as an opportunity to get dressed up and have a few drinks!

Through judging the Awards, it really hit home this year that we don’t necessarily appreciate the skills, expertise and diversity located right under our noses.  Whatever product or services your business needs, I suspect Medway has the answer and I look forward to even more entrants next year.
