Pensions and Divorce

Equalities Minister Harriet Harman commented recently on a report by the National Equality Panel. The report found that women earn significantly less than men.  Inevitably this also means that they have significantly less in the way of pension provision when they reach retirement age.

Equalisation of pensions, particularly for women who are in their 40s or older, is vital when negotiating a financial settlement within Divorce.

Moreover, because of women’s greater average life expectancy, it may be necessary for the wife to receive significantly more than 50% of the parties’ combined pension entitlement in order to ensure that the husband and wife can look forward to the same pension income when they reach retirement age.
