Act Fast If You are The Victim Of A Crash For Cash Scam

21 February 2007

If you’re the victim of a ‘crash for cash’ scam – a disturbing new trend where another driver deliberately crashes into you to try to claim compensation - act quickly.

The advice comes from Neille Ryan, personal injury lawyer at Furley Page Solicitors, who says: “As bizarre as it may seem, this type of accident actually is on the increase but even in these unfortunate circumstances, all is not lost. By definition the accident is the other driver’s fault so you are actually entitled to claim against them but even if they are not insured or, worse still, untraceable you may be able to claim compensation from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau or possibly the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.”

Neille’s six point action plan is:

  • always exchange details with the other driver. Don’t rely on a registration number – it could be a fake plate
  • try to get the names and addresses of any witnesses
  • carry a disposable camera so you have a photographic record
  • make a sketch plan as soon as possible after the accident and sign and date it
  • if anyone is injured notify the police from the scene
  • if you are injured contact an experienced local personal injury solicitor and bring a claim against the other driver
