Canterbury's largest property deal

...in the safe hands of Furley Page

TV dragon James Caan behind £46m contract

Top law firm Furley Page has played a central role in one of Canterbury’s biggest property deals, just months after expanding its Real Estate team.

Furley Page acted for the sellers in the £46m deal that saw the student village in Parham Road bought by TV Dragon’s Den entrepreneur James Caan in association with Kuwaiti backers Dimah Capital.

Caan is chairman of London-based 90 North Real Estate, which secured the privately-owned 800-bedroom complex for the Kuwaitis. The deal was signed with developers Pavilion Property Group.

Jeremy Licence, Partner and Head of Real Estate at Furley Page, led the team involved in a deal which took several months to negotiate. “We are delighted to have been involved in the contract, which is a prime example of the large-scale student accommodation deals we have been involved in across the South East and beyond in recent years,” he said.

“The sector continues to grow, with students becoming more discerning about their accommodation, and it’s an area in which our expertise is recognised by developers, further education providers, and banks.”

Jeremy Licence rejoined Furley Page at the beginning of the year to help the firm build on its already strong position for property work. Under his guidance, the new Real Estate team brought together all of Furley Page’s property-related work, including commercial, residential, educational and agricultural property.

“By co-ordinating all of our property teams into one structure, we now offer clients an enhanced service,” added Jeremy. “With a larger, multi-layered team we are very well placed to work on significant deals like this one, which involved the organisation of a considerable amount of data.”

Each of Furley Page’s property-related teams is highly regarded – in its most recent edition, independent legal guide Chambers UK ranks Furley Page’s real estate and real estate litigation teams, while The Legal 500 guide ranks Furley Page in 13 practice areas, including real estate, real estate litigation, agriculture, education, charities and estates. Furley Page is also accredited as a member of the Law Society’s Conveyancing Quality Scheme, which recognises excellence in the home buying process.
