Furley Page Hosts "Trafalgar Day" Charity Golf Tournament

24 October 2005

Golfers from companies throughout Kent who battled it out on the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar to raise money for charity were treated to a splendid feast at ‘the 19th’ by leading law firm Furley Page.

On Trafalgar Day (Friday October 21) 78 players took part in a charity tournament at the Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club in Deal. Gunfire signals started the battle at 0930 with a simultaneous tee-off at all 18 holes. Players started in beautiful autumn conditions but had to battle even to see the ball over the final five holes. At the 8th hole players were asked to wear Nelson-style eye patches when trying to beat the course’s assistant pro James Whistler.

Repeating their support in previous years, Furley Page hosted lunch for the players, who raised more than £45,000 for Pilgrims Hospices in Kent despite the gloomy weather. The law firm also entered its own team.

The lunch was followed by a fund-raising auction of lots that included the use of a house beside the Marbella golf course, a Florida villa holiday and a Battle of Trafalgar painting by artist Terence Round, from Sandwich.

Peter Hawkes, Furley Page’s senior partner, said: “We were delighted to support this event once again – an event made all the more special by the Battle of Trafalgar’s bicentenary. The weather certainly didn’t dampen players’ enthusiasm as a tremendous amount was raised for the charity.”
