To mark the opening of its new Thames Gateway office, leading South East law firm Furley Page is sponsoring the first ‘alternative’ university boat race to be held on the River Medway.
Two crews from the Universities of Kent and Greenwich will be fiercely competing along a three-mile course from Halling to the start of Rochester moorings along the Esplanade to win the Medway Boat Race on Saturday May 26 at 11.45pm. The women’s race between Kent and Canterbury Christ church starts at 11am. Rowing Silver Olympic medallist Alison Mowbray will be attending the event.
Furley Page, which sponsors a number of sporting, musical and community events in Kent, opens its new offices in the Clocktower building at the Historic Dockyard, Chatham, in May. The firm, recommended by independent legal publications Chambers UK and Legal 500, will provide specialist advice to business clients in the rapidly growing Thames Gateway market.
Established for nearly three centuries with offices in Canterbury and Whitstable, Furley Page is funding the race’s prestigious trophy and medals which has been designed by Kent sculptor Paula Groves. She previously created the dynamic public sculpture in Medway that counts down to the 2012 British Olympics.
Peter Hawkes, Furley Page’s senior partner said: “The massive regeneration of Thames Gateway is providing many opportunitiesfor businesses. Expanding our firm into the region is a major development for us; and as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility Programme, sponsorship of the Medway Boat Race enables us to support the local community.”
Medway Council has championed the formation of the boat race. Deputy Leader Cllr Alan Jarrett said: “We are grateful to Furley Page for sponsoring this exciting new race that we hope will become an annual event. We’re also delighted the firm has chosen Medway in which to grow its business.”
