One of the highlights of Kent’s musical calendar gets off on a high note next month – thanks to sponsorship by leading south east law firm Furley Page.
The solicitors, with offices in Canterbury and Whitstable, is sponsoring a free lunchtime concert series at the Gulbenkian Theatre, University of Kent. Open to everyone, the concerts start at 1.10pm and finish with a ‘give what you can’ collection.
Toast of the Edinburgh Festival in recent years, award-winning percussion duo Oliver Cox and Owen Gunnell open the series on October 9. Combining a phenomenal technique with style and panache, the duo will perform a mix of popular classics and accessible contemporary music on marimbas, vibraphone and percussion.
Other concerts include:
November 13 – internationally-celebrated musicians Alison Stephens (mandolin) and Craig Ogden (guitar) have dazzled audiences around the world since they launched their musical partnership in 1999. Alison has been involved in several projects connected with Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and can be heard on the soundtrack of the Hollywood film. Their CD ‘Music from the Novels of Louis de Bernieres’ sold more than 10,000 copies in its first three months.
December 14 – pianist Krystian Belliere, who has recently made highly-acclaimed debuts at London’s Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre and St John’s Smith Square, plays piano music by Shostakovich including some of his extraordinary Preludes and Fugues, Opus 87, together with their baroque counterparts by JS Bach.
Peter Hawkes, senior partner at Furley Page, said: “The firm has a strong tradition of supporting music in Kent and we are very pleased, once again, to sponsor this excellent free concert series featuring some exciting musicians.
“What makes this event so special is that is accessible to everyone and they can just turn up on the day to hear some great music. There’s no need to book.”
