Furley Page Sponsors Major Retrospective Exhibition At Canterbury Festival

20 September 2007

A major retrospective exhibition of the celebrated Kent artist John Ward is being sponsored by leading south east law firm Furley Page.

John Ward, who died in June at the age of 89 at his family home in Bilting, was one of the country’s most distinguished painters and draughtsmen.

With loans from national and private collections, the exhibition – featuring in this year’s Canterbury Festival – is being staged at Canterbury Royal Museum from October 6 – November 17, Monday to Saturday 10am – 5pm.

Peter Hawkes, senior partner at Furley Page, commented: “The firm has a special link with John Ward as we first sponsored one of his exhibitions 10 years ago. We are proud to support this celebration of the people, places and stories depicted by this much-loved and respected artist.”

John Ward was best known as a portrait painter and among his most famous is a sensitive oil of Princess Anne in 1987 which hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. He gave sketching lessons to Prince Charles and in recent years painted a portrait for The King’s School of Canterbury’s revered Cannon Ingram Hill.

During a long career which included book illustration (his drawings for Laurie Lee’s Cider With Rosie added to his enduring success) he worked for Vogue magazine for four years drawing fashion models.

The exhibition is being opened by the TV celebrity actress Joanna Lumley on October 5.
