21 October 2005
One of the highlights of Kent’s musical calendar got off on the right note – thanks to the continuing sponsorship of south east’s leading law firm Furley Page.
The solicitors, with offices in Canterbury and Whitstable, are sponsoring a series of free lunchtime concerts at the Gulbenkian Theatre, University of Kent. Open to all, the concerts start at 1.10pm and finish with a ‘give what you can’ collection.
The first concert on October 10 saw a 300-strong audience enjoy Trio Gitano, three young guitarists who have performed at the Royal Festival Hall and the Royal Opera House with a repertoire spanning classical, flamenco, latin and gypsy jazz.
Concerts coming up include:
November 7– Alexander Volpov (cello), Jonathan Duke (piano), performing a varied programme from Boccherini to Fauré, together with showpieces from Russian composers.
December 5 – The London Community Gospel Choir, know worldwide for their traditional and soulful arrangements, funky gospel flair, swing-beat and R ‘n’ B.
January 23– University of Kent Camerata performing Mozart.
Another concert is planned for February 20 with performers to be announced soon.
Peter Hawkes, Senior Partner at Furley Page, said: “We are delighted to be supporting these free concerts once again. It’s wonderful that Canterbury can host such a fine line up of musicians. Furley Page has a proud tradition of supporting music in Kent. What makes this so special is that anyone can turn up on the day – without booking – and hear great music.”
