Leading regional law firm Furley Page is sponsoring the reprint of a book about the first ever legal text written in English – The First Code of English Law by Patrick Wormald.
The Textus Roffensis, housed in the Medway Archives, Maidstone, Kent, was produced in the 12th century.
This iconic work contains the earliest record of the English language, the first recorded English laws and the Coronation Oath of Henry 1 which influenced the barons who drafted the Magna Carta and is the subject of a special conference at the University of Kent from July 25 – 27 to discuss its worldwide importance.
Peter Hawkes, senior partner at Furley Page, said: “This is a fascinating book on law and English in its earliest written form and about one of the most significant texts issued by England’s early kingdoms going back to the laws of King Ethelbert of Kent around 604.”
The conference is being chaired by University of Kent’s chancellor Sir Robert Worcester and features an open lecture by broadcaster and historian Michael Wood.
