Making money work for the elderly

16 December 2010

Anyone can call themselves an advisor or a planner but in the alphabet soup of the financial world the chartered financial planner has reached a pinnacle in their profession.

Ruth Dolan is a chartered financial planner at leading regional law firm Furley Page which has offices across Kent and in Lloyds of London. She has recently achieved another industry ‘gong’ – membership of the highly respected Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA) which offers a raft of financial advice for the elderly, their families and their carers.

A job as a cashier in a bank put Ruth on the road to finance – or more to the point, other people’s finances.

Early on in her career she kept her eye on the goal and has worked in the financial services industry since 1996. She has an advanced diploma in financial planning, is an associate member of the Personal Finance Society and also the Chartered Insurance Institute.

“I love the excitement and the fact that the financial world is always changing,” she says. It’s an unsurprising comment given she’s reached the elevated status of chartered financial planner.

Thirty five year old Ruth, who lives in Margate with her husband and young son, is based at Furley Page’s Canterbury and Whitstable offices where she specialises in helping older people cope with stressful financial lifestyle issues in their advancing years.  She is also a member of the firm’s newly-launched care sector team which operates closely with care home providers.

Entry to SOLLA is a fairly rigorous process for would-be members involving a comprehensive personal ‘audit’ by the society delving into training, experience and qualifications, and a role-play session with a fictitious case study that is recorded and scrutinised.

Ruth has an obvious affinity with older people and the problems they face – gritty issues most of us want to ignore like having to sell up and go into a home and wondering whether you’ll be able to fund the costs yourself. She is handling four cases at the moment where this is a key concern.

“Many of my clients are vulnerable and have no-one to advise them,” she explains . “I can’t believe the number of people who don’t have a family member they can turn to or someone close they are able to discuss money issues with. It’s a minefield for them so it’s good to be able to give them options – to give them back a feeling of control again.”

To lessen the stress she has developed a definitive review service which allows clients and their relatives to consider all the choices open to them.

Ruth is also an affiliated member of the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and advises trustees over the investment of trust funds.
