A keen interest in the welfare of children was a big motivation for Kent lawyer
Susi Burgess to specialise as a family law solicitor.
Susi, who has recently joined the specialist family law team at Furley Page Solicitors (recommended by Legal 500 for advising on family matters), said: “There are many misconceptions that float around relating to the rights of mother, father and child during a family breakdown but I consider the needs of the child to be paramount.
“Family law clients are usually going through, or have recently endured, a time of great disruption so a solicitor has to be a friend with the ability to give practical and common sense advice as well as legal advice.”
Before the move to Furley Page, Susi began her legal training embracing all fields of the law at a Maidstone-based solicitors before transferring to a law firm in Islington.
Susi warmed to family law early on in her training. She recognises that when couples are separating, both parties still need to be parents to the children so she helps them to focus on each child’s welfare, whether through negotiation, mediation or the court process.
Experienced in resolving financial disputes, she is aware that the anxiety associated with the financial division of the matrimonial home and assets can be more stressful than the separation itself.
In her spare time she enjoys keeping fit – she dances with the Prima Stage School near Maidstone, her home town - and spending quality time with her family. She is busy planning her wedding next summer.
