Rowing crews from the Universities of Kent and Greenwich fiercely competed for the Medway Boat Race – the first ‘alternative’ boat race sponsored by leading South East law firm Furley Page LLP.
The crews raced along a three-mile course from Halling to the start of Rochester moorings along the Esplanade on Saturday May 26 with the victors Greenwich beating their rivals Kent. The women’s race was won by Kent – they defeated Canterbury Christ Church.
James Pigott, partner and head of Furley Page’s new Thames Gateway office and Medway Council leader Rodney Chambers presented the trophy and winners’ medals designed by Kent sculptor Paula Groves. Rowing Silver Olympic medallist Alison Mowbray also attended.
Furley Page, which sponsors a number of sporting, musical and community events in Kent, opened its new offices in the Clocktower building at the Historic Dockyard, Chatham, in May. The firm, recommended by independent legal publications Chambers UK and Legal 500, will provide specialist advice to business clients in the rapidly growing Thames Gateway market. Established for nearly three centuries, Furley Page also has offices in Canterbury and Whitstable.
James Pigott said: “It’s been a very exciting month for Furley Page as we have opened our prestigious new offices in the region, and supported this great first ‘alternative’ boat race on the River Medway. The skill and effort of the crews was quite outstanding, providing some excellent entertainment and a good day out. We are grateful to Medway Council and the Universities for making it happen.”
