Time to get to grips with Employment Law

01 September 2010

With the Coalition Government pledging to conduct a review of employment laws it’s time to get to grips with what’s new and what’s on the cards in the months to come.

Two specialist employment lawyers from leading regional law firm Furley Page are presenting another of the firm’s strategic workshops in October in association with Thames Gateway (Kent) Chamber of Commerce.

The firm’s employment team, led by partner Andrew Masters, is recommended by independent legal guides Chambers UK and The Legal 500.

Andrew, personally recognised by Chambers as a “leader in the field of employment law”, commented: “These workshops are an important initiative for employers. Employment is a complex and constantly changing area of the law – particularly now under the Coalition Government which has indicated that it will carry out a comprehensive review of employment laws to ensure maximum flexibility, protect fairness and promote competitiveness.

“The changes will affect all businesses, no matter what the size, and employers need to have a clear understanding of best HR practice to avoid unnecessary and costly disputes.”

The workshops are open to chamber members and non-members throughout Kent and suited to all firms – small and large.  As well as practical guidance, there will also be question and answer sessions.

Andrew’s employment colleague Sian Dockray will be joining him for the workshop which is on October 20 at the Thames Gateway (Kent) Chamber of Commerce offices at Stirling House, Sunderland Quay, Medway City Estate, Rochester. Registration is from 8.30am for a 9am start. The workshop finishes at 12.30pm with coffee and sandwiches.

Topics covered are:

  • recent developments in employment law and future changes
  • practical guidance on how to prepare for change
  • effects on HR policies and procedures and people management
  • the Coalition Government’s current and future programme for employment law
  • new cases, employment reforms and implementation of European directives.

Andrew Masters specialises in all areas of employment law, working with a large client base ranging from national and international companies to educational establishments, charities and smaller enterprises. Over the years he has developed a strong reputation for advising employers at an early stage to prevent unnecessary and costly disputes. An experienced lecturer and trainer in employment law, he has written a number of widely-published articles on employment-related matters and regularly appears in the media.

Sian Dockray, solicitor, advises on diverse employment issues including unfair dismissal, discrimination, employment status, breach of contract, and bullying and harassment. She regularly drafts and reviews contracts of employment, directors’ service agreements, and HR policies and procedures.

  • Costs, which include coffee and sandwiches, are £35 (including VAT) to Thames Gateway Chamber of Commerce members and £45 (including VAT) to non-members.
