Uninsured and Unidentified Drivers

Three people every hour are injured by uninsured and hit and run drivers across the UK. The Motor Insurers’ Bureau [MIB] aims to reduce the level and impact of uninsured driving.

The Motor Insurers' Bureau is a 'central slush fund' paid into by motor insurers and who provide compensation for victims of uninsured and untraced drivers. It seems like a good idea and in many ways it is, but the dice are increasingly loaded in favour of the insurers. For example there are very strict time limits for claims directed to the Motor Insurers' Bureau starting with an obligation on you to report your accident to the Police. If you only want to claim damages for injury then you have 14 days from the date of the accident to report it to the Police but if your claim includes damage to property (the obvious one would be damage to your vehicle) then you only have 5 days!

Furley Page Personal Injury team can help you with a claim against the Motor Insurers' Bureau and although the way the claim is handled can be similar to a ‘normal’ claim against an insurer, there can be differences. For example medical report particularly in the case of a claim involving an untraced driver are usually arranged by the Motor Insurers' Bureau rather than us.

The important thing for you as a Claimant is to know that, even where your accident was caused by an uninsured or unidentified driver you may still be able to get compensation so you should still contact us about it.
