Top Tips When Making a Claim for Compensation

It is important to obtain and keep as much information as possible, including the following:

For Accidents:

  • Names and addresses of everyone involved, including witnesses.
  • Insurance details for everyone involved, particularly in Road Traffic Accidents.
  • For Road Traffic Accidents, the registration numbers of all vehicles.
  • A sketch plan and photographs can be invaluable.
  • Details of any police officers who attended, and the police reference number.
  • The precise location of the accident.
  • A written description of how and why the accident occurred.

For Injuries:

  • Names and addresses of everywhere you receive treatment.
  • Details of your injuries.
  • Keep a record of your symptoms and how they affect you.
  • Keep a record of assistance given to you, by family or friends.

For Losses:

  • Keep all receipts for losses and expenses, as well as a general record.
  • Receipts for medication, treatment, travel etc.
  • A record of mileage, such as going to medical appointments.
  • If you lose earnings, wage slips from at least three months before the accident.
  • Receipts for any insurance excesses, damaged clothing, personal possessions etc.
