The monthly tea parties by the charity Re-engage (formerly Contact the Elderly) for the elderly have currently been suspended due to Coronavirus (COvID-19). Re-engage offer monthly tea parties on Sunday afternoons to the over 75s who are isolated and live alone. The volunteer drivers collect the elderly guest and take them for afternoon tea at a volunteer host’s house.
However, following the recent postponement of the tea parties, Val Prosser and Melanie Christodoulou who are the co-ordinators for the Whitstable, Herne Bay and Canterbury groups, have set up a telephone buddy system between the volunteers and the elderly guests. This allows the welcome regular contact to the elderly who are isolated and enables the volunteers to check that they are doing ok during this difficult time. Any help that they may require can then be arranged.
Several staff members of Furley Page have kindly offered to make contact with the elderly in the community and help them with their shopping or anything else which they may need.
Re-engage are looking into new ways of reducing social isolation including setting up a telephone befriending service. The telephone buddy system helps to alleviate social isolation and to ensure that no-one is struggling at home alone, without essential food and medication.
This help can be offered to all elderly and vulnerable people in the local community who are isolated. Please contact us if you are in need of help. At this incredibly difficult time, we are working to develop as much support as possible for older people in our community.
