How to plan and enjoy your happy retirement

28th September 2017

Retirement is both an exciting and a worrying time for millions of people every year, with personal finances and care provision among the main issues causing concern. Financial planning is especially important, with the UK average annual bill for care at a nursing home costing around £37,752 per person.

The Planning Your Happy Retirement event, at The Marlowe Studio on October 31, is being organised by leading Kent law firm Furley Page to offer guidance on key aspects of life after work. Topics include how to plan your legal and financial affairs most effectively, ensuring your Will qualifies for the Inheritance Tax Allowance, and an explanation of care home fees and how they may affect you in the future.

Harvey Barrett, a Partner and Head of Private Client, Trusts & Estates at Furley Page, will be available to answer your questions throughout the day. He specialises in Wills, trusts, and tax and estate planning. Harvey is a leading expert in this area and has a wealth of experience to share with you on the day.

He said: “Retirement should be a fulfilling time for everyone. This event is a chance to assess your choices and opportunities, and focus on the importance of getting your affairs, such as your Wills and finances, in order.”

Joining Harvey will be Furley Page colleague Nicola August, a Partner and Head of the firm’s Vulnerable Client Team, who has expertise in mental capacity issues, care funding, elderly and vulnerable client matters and Powers of Attorney. In addition, Nicola is an Approved Court of Protection Panel Deputy, one of four in the county and the only one in East Kent.

Completing the line-up of experts is Ruth Dolan from Tarvos Wealth Financial Planners in Canterbury. Ruth is a Chartered Financial Planner and an Accredited Later Life Adviser, and she will be on hand to give guidance on your plans for retirement. Ruth is a member of the Advisory Board for SOLLA (Society of Later Life Advisers).

The guest speaker is Mark Everett, Marlowe Theatre Director, who will discuss his moving-on from the theatre in October for the first time. He will talk about the years he has spent in the industry, as well as his own plans for retirement.

The Planning Your Happy Retirement event, which is open to everyone, takes place from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday 31 October at The Marlowe Studio, The Friars, Canterbury. The cost is £20.75 (£19.50 + booking fee of £1.25*), which includes refreshments and a light lunch. Places can be booked through The Marlowe Theatre box office on 01227 787787 or online at

Furley Page supports The Marlowe Theatre through its Wills and Legacy campaign, which encourages theatregoers to leave a gift to The Marlowe Theatre Development Trust for the benefit of future generations. Legacies help the Trust to support projects which enhance the theatre’s artistic programme, encourage new audiences and enable the growth of local creative talent.
