As World Cup fever grips the nation this week, avid football fans at leading Kent law firm Furley Page are eagerly anticipating the chance to meet an England football legend.
Gordon Banks, England’s World Cup winning goalkeeper, is the special guest at the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce annual dinner at the Ashford International Hotel on Tuesday July 8 – the evening of the first World Cup semi-final, which guests will be able to watch live from Brazil.
The dinner is being sponsored by Furley Page and for two of the firm’s football-mad partners in particular, who will be hosting Gordon on the top table, the chance to hear their hero’s memories of lifting the 1966 World Cup at Wembley is a dream come true.
Andrew Masters, Partner and Head of Furley Page’s Employment team, said: “It’s not every day you get to meet a sporting legend and to be able to watch a World Cup semi-final with him will be fantastic. We’re incredibly proud to sponsor what promises to be an exciting and enjoyable evening.
“Of course, we don’t know who will be playing but if England were to make it that far, it would be the icing on the cake.
“The World Cup only comes around every four years and occasions like this are a great opportunity to create a positive atmosphere, network with colleagues and celebrate with valued staff. The event is open to everyone and we hope that as many people as possible support it.”
Aaron Spencer, Partner in the Private Trusts and Estates team, and a goalkeeper himself, said having Gordon Banks as a guest would offer a unique insight into what happens behind the scenes at major international matches.
“Gordon Banks is associated with two epic matches, the World Cup Final in 1966, when England defeated West Germany in extra time, and the group match against Brazil in 1970, when he made a seemingly impossible save from Pele’s header,” he added.
“Everyone is keen to meet him and to hear first-hand about his amazing England career. If England somehow manage to make it to the semi-final, I think I might even be able to cope with the agony of a penalty shoot-out if we have the legendary Gordon Banks there to help us through it!”
As well as being the sponsor, Furley Page is further supporting the event by taking a table of 10, with five of the firm’s fee earners each bringing a guest.
The event, starting with a drinks reception from 5.30pm, followed by dinner at 6.30pm, is at the Ashford International Hotel, Simone Weil Avenue, Ashford, TN24 8UX on Tuesday July 8. Ticket prices include reception drink, three-course dinner and live football.
To book email email@example.com or call Penny on 01732 758530. Tickets are £39.50 plus VAT per person or £380 plus VAT for a table of 10.
