People often ask me what a typical day looks like for a corporate and commercial solicitor. The honest answer is simple: there isn’t one.

One of the things I enjoy most about my role is the variety. In the course of a single a day, I could be reviewing a commercial contract, drafting terms and conditions, advising on a merger or acquisition, assisting with corporate governance matters, or supporting charities navigate legal challenges. Each matter brings its own considerations, clients and objectives. Being part of an historic law-firm with proximity to London, and with strong links across Kent and the South-East, means I have I have the opportunity to work with an exciting range of clients across different sectors, each presenting their own unique goals and challenges.

In my capacity as a corporate and commercial solicitor, I work with a diverse range of clients, from large corporate entities and SMEs to charities and not-for-profit organisations. One of the most interesting aspects of the role is that an initial instruction often develops into something quite different as a matter progresses. What may begin as a request for assistance with a particular issue or transaction can, through discussion and a deeper understanding of the client’s objectives, lead to wider commercial or strategic considerations that also need to be addressed. Taking the time to understand the bigger picture is therefore key to providing advice that is both practical and tailored to the client’s needs.

Complexity

I like that the work is rarely simple. The issues we deal with are often complex and require time to fully understand both the legal position and the client’s wider commercial goals. The answer is not always immediately apparent, and getting to the heart of an issue often means looking beyond the question at hand to understand the bigger picture. It can take time to piece everything together, but that’s what makes it so satisfying when everything clicks into place and a solution is found. Seeing the positive impact that advice can have for a client makes the effort worthwhile. There’s a real sense of achievement in understanding what a client is trying to achieve and finding the best way to help them get there, meaning no two days (and often no two hours!) are ever quite the same.

Relationships are key

A key aspect of the role that I particularly enjoy is building long-term relationships with clients. Often, I am not simply advising on a single transaction or contract, but getting to know a client’s business or organisation over time. This allows me to gain a deeper understanding of their objectives and the challenges they face, and plans for growth. All this enables me to provide advice that is not only legally sound but also commercially practical and tailored to their specific needs. Helping clients navigate a project from inception through to completion is incredibly satisfying.

Whilst the pace can be demanding at times, it is the combination of variety, problem-solving and genuine intrigue that keeps the role interesting. Every client, matter and sector brings something different, creating constant opportunities to learn and develop.

The sense of achievement when a client walks away with a positive outcome, is what motivates me and makes a career in corporate and commercial law so fulfilling.
