Why did you choose Furley Page to pursue your training?
I chose Furley Page as it has a strong reputation within the South East of being a historic, established law firm, and that appealed to me. Furley Page has a long and interesting heritage and is passionate about retaining and celebrating its traditions whilst also looking towards the future; this is something I was eager to join and play a part in. In addition, there are many Associates and Partners who trained at Furley Page, and so this demonstrated to me that Furley Page is both encouraging and eager to aid career progression.
What has been your over-riding impression so far of the training programme at Furley Page?
The sentiment that no question is a silly question! It can be overwhelming starting a training contract, but seniors and assistants alike are all very understanding, patient, and happy to help with any questions I have had. I have daily contact with partners of the firm and this means I have been able to lucky enough to learn a great deal from them by asking lots of questions.
What has been your most memorable work related experience during you training programme?
Carrying out my first telephone mediation with the court was particularly memorable – both scary and exciting! Whilst it was new to me, I had plenty of support to guide me, and it was a good opportunity to learn practically on the job. The feeling of satisfaction when I successfully reached a settlement was like no other.
What skill do you think are essential to be a successful lawyer?
Attention to detail, being approachable, and learning from mistakes.
What advise would you give anyone looking to train as a solicitor?
Any and all experience can be useful – not just legal. Whilst of course having experience in legal practice is useful, do not discredit other life or work experiences you may have – you’d be surprised how much the skills you learn along the way can end up being used in your legal training!
