A Sunday afternoon tea party club for elderly people run by a lawyer from Canterbury has celebrated the centenary of one of its members.

Melanie Christodoulou, a Senior Associate at law firm Furley Page, arranges the monthly afternoon tea parties on behalf of Re-engage (formerly Contact the Elderly) for the Canterbury area.

The charity brings older people together at a time in their lives when their social circles are diminishing, in order to tackle isolation and loneliness by organising social groups with volunteers.

Melanie recently organised the birthday celebration of one of the group’s longstanding members, Denis Smith, who turned 100. To celebrate, the group held a pub lunch in the heart of Canterbury which was attended by fellow elderly guests, volunteers and drivers, during which Denis was presented with a specially made birthday cake.

Melanie said: “It was lovely to celebrate such a momentous occasion for Denis; he was thrilled by his surprise party and delighted to spend his birthday with the many friends he has made in the group. The Re-engage charity tea parties are a great way to meet new people and give something back to our community.”
