Seminar to offer Kent employers insights on important new rights for workers

January 15, 2025
In February, Kent employers will be offered valuable insights and practical guidance on navigating significant changes to employment law.
On Wednesday, 12 February 2025, leading Kent law firm, Furley Page, in partnership with Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce, will present a seminar to review recent and forthcoming changes to employment law, including the duty to prevent sexual harassment and the key features of the Employment Rights Bill 2024, together with advice on the practical steps that employers can take to ensure they are compliant with new legislation.
Changes were introduced in October 2024 and mean employers now have a protective duty to take ‘all reasonable steps’ to prevent sexual harassment of their employees in the workplace, including harassment by third parties. The duty covers acts committed ‘in the course of their employment,’ which includes the workplace and any social events with a connection to work.
The seminar will be delivered by leading employment law experts Andrew Masters, Partner and Head of Employment, and Patrick Glencross, Senior Associate, who between them have 50 years’ experience of advising employers. The session will cover a range of subjects including sexual harassment at work, proposed changes to unfair dismissal laws, zero hours contracts and flexible working, day one rights, fire and rehire, and the forthcoming Equality (Race and Disability) Bill.
Andrew said: “The changes that the Labour Government is implementing have been described as the ‘the biggest upgrade to rights at work for a generation.” The new laws represent a seismic change for employers and for employees.
“It is vital that employers conduct a review of their procedures and practices and prepare for the changes. Employers should also undertake a thorough sexual harassment risk assessment and review their anti-harassment policy to ensure employees know that sexual harassment in the workplace is unacceptable, unlawful and will likely lead to disciplinary action and potential dismissal for employees. There is also a high risk of reputational damage and poor publicity for the employer.”
The seminar will be held on Wednesday 12 February 2025 at Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel, Ashford Road, Hollingbourne, Maidstone, ME17 1RE. The session starts at 8.30am and finishes at 12noon. Kent Invicta Chamber members receive a discounted rate of £40 + vat, while the cost for non-members is £50 + vat.
