Early festive cheer was brought to a group of elderly residents on Sunday (December 3) at an enjoyable Christmas party.
Herne Junior School hosted this wonderful event, and the school choir performed a number of Christmas carols for the guests, aged between 80 and 95. The volunteers, some of whom are staff of Furley Page Solicitors, provided the food and made sure everyone had a good time and had plenty to eat.
This local Contact the Elderly group was launched in December 2014 and brings lonely and isolated over-75s together. The Christmas party was organised by volunteer co-ordinator Val Prosser, who is a Senior Associate in the Vulnerable Client Team of Furley Page.
Val said: “The children sang beautifully, and the elderly guests were delighted to join in and sing along to the Christmas carols. The children kindly gave presents to the elderly guests which were gratefully received. The afternoon was a very special time for all those who attended and it was very rewarding to see the elderly guests looking so happy.”
Contact the Elderly is a national charity dedicated to tackling social isolation among older people. The local group invites those in the Herne Bay, Canterbury and Whitstable areas to a Sunday afternoon tea party once a month.
“Sunday afternoons can be the most difficult time for people on their own, which is why Contact the Elderly organises such events to reduce feelings of loneliness,” Val said. It gives them the chance to meet people and make new friends, and I know they all very much look forward to their next afternoon tea together.”
Anyone interested in joining the group can do so, with no obligation and no cost attached to those who attend. Members will be collected from their homes by volunteer drivers and taken to the home of a volunteer tea party host. Often, the same driver will collect the member each month and develop a genuine bond.
Val added: “New volunteers are always welcome, either drivers or those wanting to host parties. It’s thoroughly enjoyable, for members and helpers alike.”
If you would like to join, know someone over 75 living alone in Herne Bay, Canterbury or Whitstable who would benefit from joining, or would like to be a volunteer driver or host, email Val Prosser at firstname.lastname@example.org or call her on 01227 763939.
